My Story
Discovering a Miraculous Life
I have been a student of A Course In Miracles (ACIM) since May 1979. I had just moved to Nashville, Tennessee from Key West, Florida. I arrived in Nashville with a BA degree in Psychology, a lovely wife, and our first son. We moved to be close to her family and I was trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.
On our very first Sunday in Nashville, I attended First Church Unity. The guest speaker was traveling to many Unity churches to introduce ACIM. The Course had been given to the public by Helen Shucman and William Thetford just three years earlier, in 1976. That Sunday, the guest speaker offered an ACIM workshop immediately following the regular service. He mentioned that if anyone was interested in a private counseling session, he was open to it. I accepted that offer.
I purchased the ACIM book that Sunday. What ensued was beyond my wildest imagination.
For the next seven days, I was astounded to discover that I could literally view my body from outside myself. I lived an out-of-body experience with such powerful spiritual feelings that I truly have no words to adequate describe it. I cannot compare that experience to anything in this world. I knew to my core that I found my right path. I understood my purpose in life.
I began to read and re-read that ACIM book. Even when a lot of it confused me, I was not a bit discouraged, because the words just called me home.
Over the years I have read A Course In Miracles well over a hundred times. I continue to read and study it as I teach, because it keeps me focused on Peace. And I never tire of seeing others absorb it, even grapple with it, witnessing how it changes and heals their lives in so many ways.
The Early Days
In the early days as a student of ACIM, no supplemental study material was available. We only had the book. The first ACIM class I attended came together informally in the early 1980s when a group of us desperately desired to share and discuss the life-changing concepts we were reading.
The discussion went something like this: "I don't know what that means. What do you think it means?" We didn't even have a teacher until 1987. And when he left the next year, I was asked to take over the class. In truth, I had already studied the Course so thoroughly that when I answered students' questions, they understood ACIM concepts with more clarity.
In addition to my personal study of the Course, I have studied the resource works of Dr. Kenneth Wapnick, the close friend of Helen Schucman and William Thetford, who organized the original version of A Course In Miracles. From 1986 to 1992, I traveled to New York annually to attend classes at Wapnick's teaching center, The Foundation for A Course In Miracles. During those trips, I reviewed and discussed the meaning of the Course with Wapnick himself, until I was confident that I had grasped its profound teachings.
